The Educational Resource Center of Santa Cruz is committed to providing educational resources, enrichment materials, and support for families and educators of preschool through sixth grade children. The center’s philosophy is that children should be actively engaged in the learning process and that learning materials should match a child’s learning style. The Educational Resource Center currently provides a membership based lending library, networking opportunities, and occasional workshops.
Membership
Member benefits include: use of the lending library, free consultation for selecting materials, use of the networking bulletin board, low cost copying, binding, and lamination, and free or reduced cost access to workshops when offered.
Membership dues per family are $120 per year, $70 for six months, or $40 for three months. Members are free to take advantage of membership benefits anytime after their membership agreement is signed and their dues are paid.We accept cash and checks at the Resource Center and credit cards online. Lending Library Policies
1. Members in good standing have free access to the lending library during its open hours. 2. Items may be borrowed for one month and may be renewed once if no other member has reserved the item. To renew items, members may bring the item back to the resource center for renewal or call with the item number and original due date. 3. Members may check out up to six items at a time from the resource center. This number will be increased for new and existing members as additional materials are added to the library. 4. Late fees of $0.50 per item per week will be charged. This fine will be waived if the member has contacted the resource center regarding late items and arranged for their return within one week. 5. Items should be returned in the condition in which they were borrowed. Light, normal wear is expected. 6. Regardless of what actually causes the damage or loss, replacement costs of any lost, damaged, stolen, or otherwise non-reusable items are the member’s responsibility. The Resource Center will work with the member to find the fairest replacement possible (for instance, if an item can be purchased used, that cost will be charged rather than the full retail value). If loss or damage occurs to an item which does not affect its usability (for instance, the loss of one cube from a Unifix set), this will be considered part of “normal wear” and no fines will be assessed. 7. Please do not mark in or on any borrowed items. Especially in the case of workbooks, curricula, and resource materials, please either purchase the corresponding reproducibles (when applicable) from the publisher, or make copies of worksheets for your own use. 8. Although the center does not prohibit the lending of items to families with a smoker in the home, we do encourage you to keep lending library items away from all smoking materials. Items returned with a strong odor of smoke may, at the resource center’s sole discretion, incur an item replacement fee. 9. Members may not check out any items (even if they have not reached their maximum) if they have overdue materials that have not been renewed or an item has been lost or damaged and has not been paid for. 10. You explicitly agree NOT to copy, reproduce, redistribute, or otherwise violate any publisher's copyrights when using any library item. (Reproducibles excepted when authorized by the publisher.) 11. Members are invited to ask for the purchase of new items they want and give feedback on the usefulness of items they use. All member suggestions will be taken into account as new items are purchased. The resource center would also be happy to accept donations of gently used learning materials.
Other Membership Benefits
1. A bulletin board is available for members to network with other members. Please feel free to use this board to buy/sell learning items, search for playgroups or learning clubs, advertise for tutors or mentoring, etc. Notices should be no larger than 4” by 6” and will be removed after two months. 2. Low cost lamination and copying is available. Please ask for current prices which reflect only the replacement cost of paper and ink or lamination material. 3. Occasional workshops for parents and/or children will be offered. These workshops will be advertised to both members and non-members and will always be at a reduced rate or in some instances free to members. 4. The Resource Center is always willing to help match learning materials with interests and needs. My interest in opening a resource center stems from many years as a teacher, curriculum consultant, and parent. I have worked with a wide range of children and subject areas and am happy to discuss possible resources, whether available through the resource center or not, to match the learning styles and needs of a member’s children.
