Heddi has worked as a classroom teacher in Kansas, Massachusetts, and California in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. Her teaching philosophy was to provide children with many choices, hands-on learning experiences, and opportunities to construct their own understanding in the subject areas. In addition, she was a curriculum consultant in thirteen states, working with K-12 school districts in creating local curriculum documents that emphasized higher order thinking skills, matching classroom practice to those documents, and creating local assessments that emphasized projects rather than paper-pencil testing.
Heddi currently lives in Santa Cruz, CA, with her husband and three children. She runs the Resource Center, teaches occasional classes, speaks at conferences and schools, and works part time as a curriculum consultant. About the Education Resource Center
The Educational Resource Center of Santa Cruz is committed to providing educational resources, enrichment materials, and support for families and educators of preschool through sixth grade children. The center’s philosophy is that children should be actively engaged in the learning process and that learning materials should match a child’s learning style.
The Educational Resource Center has been a dream of Heddi's for over two years. The chance to start the center as part of The Mother Tree, a beautiful space devoted to offering branches of care for women and families, allowed the Educational Resource Center to begin in August of 2005. In May of 2006, the Resource Center moved to a location in downtown Santa Cruz and expanded its hours to three days a week.
Heddi hopes to add more hours, learning materials for grades 7-12, and classes for teachers as the center grows.
